Establishing and optimizing ads on Google's Display Network can be a difficult and time-consuming process. And, all too often, that learning curve follows a squandered advertising budget. What You Should Know about Display Ad Sizes

According to the data, larger ad sizes perform far better than smaller ads.  That seems reasonable because a larger ad takes up more screen space and catches the viewer's attention more. 

Larger ads are more likely to convert after each click, besides having higher average click-through rates. However, this does not imply that digital marketers must only go for large display ads. In fact, in most cases, doing so would be detrimental. This is due to the impact of Google's ad inventory on the availability of display ad space in its network.

Google has a significant amount of inventory for small and medium-sized ads, but not so much for larger ads. An advertiser who only publishes large-sized ads will most likely have a high CTR but not enough reach or variety of placement.

To optimize the reach of your display ads, you should select a blend of the most popular and effective ad sizes with sufficient inventory.

For high-resolution display devices, Google AdWords Editor does not support double-sized images (for instance, a 640 x 100 image for a 320 x 50 ad slot).

The most common Google ad images sizes are: 

  • 250 x 250 – Square
  • 200 x 200 – Small Square
  • 468 x 60 – Banner
  • 728 x 90 – Leaderboard
  • 300 x 250 – Inline Rectangle
  • 336 x 280 – Large Rectangle
  • 120 x 600 – Skyscraper
  • 160 x 600 – Wide Skyscraper

Top Google Ad Image Sizes

300 x 250

As previously stated, this image size is known as the "medium rectangle" size and is one of the most commonly used banner ad sizes online.

When compared to larger options such as the 300x600, it is relatively compact and takes up little space.

That is a part of what makes it appealing to so many publishers.

Another advantage is that this type of ad is usually embedded in the text, which reduces the likelihood that your customers will simply scroll past it.

728 x 90

This ad size is known as the "leaderboard," because it is typically displayed just at top of the page on which it is published.

Once again, it's a good option for brands looking to get their ad seen by as many people as possible.

300 x 600

This ad size is commonly referred to as "half page," despite the fact that it does not cover the entire half page.

The goal is to give marketers a little more leeway in conveying their message. You have a better chance of drawing the audience’s attention and a click because you're taking up more space.
